Las Pampas XV defeat Golden Lions in Vodacom Cup, Round 2.
Las Pampas XV won their round two match of the 2011 Vodacom Cup in South Africa on Friday. The Argentine side defeated the Johanesburg based Golden Lions 15-9 in a match that can be summed up by nothing other than outstanding defense. Los Pampas tackled superbly to not only win the match but go the full 80 minutes without conceeding a try. The Golden Lions scored first thanks to a successful penalty kick by Andre Pretorius but the South Americans responded in the best possible way with Pampas XV backrower, Leonardo Senatore scoring a try several minutes latter from phase ball on the Golden Lions try line. The next poitns game from a near full-field try after the Golden Lions had been in possesion and looking dangerous with their forwards. Los Pampas resisted and following a turnover Los Pampas XV kicked forward for right winger Mauro Comuzzi to collect, beat a defender and off load to leftwinger Juan Imhoff in a tackle. Imhoff scored and with the conversion the Argentine side led the match 12-3 at the interval.
The second half was similar to the first with the only difference being that neither side was able to score a try. Former South African international flyhalf, Andre Pretorius again scored first with a penalty in the 44th minute and slotted another three minutes later to close the gap to three points. González Iglesias.scored next in the 70th minute with a penalty kick of his own to give Los Pampas XV a 6 point advantage. This made the scores 15-9 and neither side would score again. The win makes Los Pampas XV one of only three teams to have won both matches in the Southern Zone of the Vodacom Cup. The other two are Eastern Province and the Sharks XV. Los Pampas XV will go up against the Blue Bulls in round three next weekend.
