Argentina Championship Underway

The 2011 National Argentina Championship known as the Torneo Argentino is underway. It kicked off with a full round of division one and two matches taking place across Argentina on Saturday. In addition to being separated into divisions each division is separated intwo two zones. The Torneo Argentino consists of eight teams with Zone one including  Cuyo, Mar del Plata, Salta and Tucumán - Cuyo are based in Mendoza but cover a larger area. Zone two includes Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario and Santa Fé. All eight teams are listed here on Rugby World Cup - Argentina 2023 are potential host venues should Argentina infact host a Rugby World Cup.

Defending champions Tucumán started very strongly with an impressive 64-17 victory over northern neighbours Salta in Tucumán. The bonus point win puts Los Naranjas in first place of Zone a ahead of Mendoza (Cuyo) who scored a 33-27 victory over Mar del Plata in what was the best match of the round. In Zone two Buenos Aires are looking for a strong season after been poor in 2010. Buenos Aires scored a 30-18 victory over Rosario in an away fixture but they failed to pick up a bonus point.  In the zones other match Córdoba notched up a highly impressive victory showing no mercy whatsoever for Santa Fé as Los Dogos won the match 70-3 at home.Former Italian international flyhalf Ramiro Pez kciked 16 points for Córdoba.
