SANZAR impressed with Pichot and the UAR

Two days ago SANZAR´s CEO, Greg Peters spoke with English rugby website http://www.scrum.com/ and confirmed that the work meets and even surpasses expectations fo where Argentina need to be to in order to enter the expanded Tri Nations in 2012. The IRB encouraged SANZAR to expand to include Argentina and in 2009 an official offer was made from SANZAR to the UAR. In order for Argentina to take part SANZAR requested that all of Argentina´s players be avaliable for selection which was considered tough given that the tournament falls outside of the IRB test windows. A solution was reached in 2010, however, as the IRB modified Regulation 9 which will ensure Argentina has all its players avaliable and clubs will be compensated.

Peters has been in Argentina two times this year already and has been impressed with the progress  and praised former Pumas captain Agustín Pichot for taking a lead role with energy and passion. Peters also attributed progress to the UAR who have been taking the neccessary steps to move towards professionalism in Argentina. Peters declared that he has no doubt that Argentina will be ready to enter the expanded Tri Nations in 2012 and that the team will be competitive and in time will be involved in Super Rugby.

The long awaited participation of Argentina in an annual first tier tournament has been a long process but will certainly open doors to even bigger things - notably Argentina hosting Rugby World Cup 2023. By 2023 Argentina would have played over ten years of rugby in the expanded Tri Nations and will also be involved in Super Rugby. The country will be more than prepared to organize a Rugby World Cup and the Americas will be the only region to never have hosted a Rugby World Cup.
