Americas International Players in Magners League - Round 13

Round thirteen of the Magerns League kicked off on Thursday evening with the bottom placed Welsh side the Newport Gwent Dragons hosting the bottom placed Irish side Connacht at Rodney Parade in Newport. The Dragons managed to hold on for a 17-16 win after leading 14-13 at half time. It was a disappointing second spell which featured only one penalty goal per side as the Dragons leapfrogged Scottish side the Glasgow Warriors to claim ninth spot on the ladder. USA international scrumhalf Mike Petri was on the bench for the Dragons.

Friday had three Magners League matches with two taking place in Ireland and one in Wales. A rematch of last seasons final was the feature as beaten finalists Leinster hosted Welsh side the Ospreys in Dublin in what was a close but forgettable match as Leinster one 15-10 without scoring a try. The only try of the match was scored by Ospreys backrower Justin Tipuric. Amazingly, the Ospreys and Welsh international flyhalf Dan Biggar missed the easiest penalty goal possible as he hit the cross bar from a kick 10 metres dead in front of the posts. the missed three points cost his side victory.

Fellow Irish side Ulster made it two Irish victories on Friday with a big 32-13 win over Italian side Benetton Treviso in Belfast. The hosts scored four tries to one. Treviso had five players from Argentina in their team with Ignacio Fernández Rouyet, Franco Sbaraglini, Augusto Allori, Pedro Di Santo and Gonzalo García all playing. However, USA international centre Paul Emerick did not play for Ulster.

Also on Friday, Welsh side the Cardiff Blues played host to Italy's other side in the Magners League, Aironi and held on to win 24-13. The Italian side featured three Argentine players in Pablo CanavosioGabriel Pizarro and Matías Agüero. Aironi, despite defeating Biarritz in this seasons Heineken Cup, remain winless in the Magners League after thirteen rounds.

Top of the table Munster hosted the Glasgow Warriors at Thomond Park in Limerick and in a close match managed to scrape past the Scottish side to win 22-20. USA born flyhalf, Ronan O'Gara kicked 17 points for the Irish province who were outscored two tries to one by the Scottish side. Canadian international winger DTH van der Merwe continued to show the world that Canada have some world class players as he scored his seventh try of the Magners League this season to be the competitions second top try scorer. Canadian test prop Kevin Tkachuk was on the bench for Glasgow and came on in the second half. They were joined by former Pumas fullback, Bernardo Stortoni who played in the 15 shirt for Glasgow.

Edinburgh's up and down season continued as the midtabled side hosted western Welsh side the Scarlets at Murrayfield. The Scarlets scored two tries to one to pull off a 21-16 victory which maintains their position in second spot on the ladder. Scottish international fullback, Chris Paterson scored all of Edinburgh's points. Pumas secondrower Esteban Lozada did not play for the Scottish side.
