Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga wins Major Sports Award

After debuting as an unknown for Argentina for Los Pumas November 2009 tour of England, Wales and Scotland, Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga has completed a dream debut in being awarded Argentine Rugby player of the year - known as the Olimpia de Plata which awards one player per sport with the title player of the year. He was one of three finalists alongside Toulon and Pumas backrower and vice captain Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe and SIC fullback and captain as well as Rugby World Cup 2007 squad member Federico Serra. The 2009 award went to Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe.

Rodríguez Gurruchaga was selected as a wildcard for Argentina to fill the gap left by the injured Pumas trio of Marcelo Bosch, Felipe Contepomi and Juan Martín Hernández who all missed the 2009 tour. The lack of players for inside centre saw Rodríguez Gurruchaga, an amateur fullback from Atlético del Rosario and Pumas Seves Rugby selected out of position in the 12 shirt and he certainly did not let the selectors down. In 2010 he was impressive for the Pampas XV in South Africa´s Vodacom Cup in which he was the teams fullback and was soon signed to play professional rugby in Europe for Stade Français. Rodríguez Gurruchaga was selected at fullback for Argentina in every test in 2010 ahead of the previous regular fullback Horacio Agulla.

The ceremony also acknowledged the great Hugo Porta in giving him the award of  “Olimpia del Bicentenario”, a special award given to a short list of some of Argentina´s best athletes of all time.
