Ecuador Rugby Champions
Once again, Nómadas Rugby Club are the national champions of Ecuador after the team based in Ecuador´s capital city, Quito smashed Monos Rugby Club 55-0 in the final to be crowned champions. Nómadas Rugby Club´s championship victory marks the clubs third consecutive title after also winning in 2008 and 2009. The Nómades did not take very long to get on the score board as they scored a try after ten minutes which changed the game which had been even until this point even. Monos Rugby Club were at their best in the initial stages of the game but they were unable to compete as the game continued. The Nómadas demonstrated their superiority in the set pieces and were dominant in lineouts and mauls and used this to their advantage as Monos Rugby Club were forced to defend.
Ecuador are not listed in the IRB World Rankings and are not a full member of the IRB. It is, however, just a question of time before this changes with Ecuador and also are Bolivia both likely to be full IRB members in the not too distant future. Ecuador does have its own governing body - the Federacio Ecuatoriana de Rugby (FER) and is involved in South American rugby through CONSUR. The FER have organized a coaching clinic in Quito tommorrow (December 10) which will be Coaching Level 1 with the partipation of, including others, Horacio Herrera, who is a former Argentina international player and the CONSUR Regional Manager. It is great news for South American and global rugby and without question the sport would experience unprecedented growth should Argentina host Rugby World Cup 2023.
