Argentina Players in Round 11 of the Magners League

Magners League

Round eleven of the Magners League season started on Friday night with an Italian derby as the country´s two Magners League sides faced each other for the first time since their creation earlier in the year.  It was Benetton Treviso who have caused several upsets vs Irish and Welsh opposition playing host to Aironi who recently achieved their first victory vs Top 14 side Biarritz in a Heineken Cup clash. It was an important game for both sides with Aironi still searching for their first Magners League victory and Benetton Treviso looking to improve their position on the ladder.

In a low scoring match, Treviso came out on top winning 15-10 in a match involving many players from Argentina. Augusto Allori, Franco Sbaraglini and Pedro Di Santo were in the starting lineup for Treviso while Diego Vidal and Ignacio Fernández Royet both came off the bench in the second half. Aironi fielded two Argentine players in the form of Matías Agüero and Gabriel Pizarro in their starting line and scrumhalf Pablo Canavosio played most of the match after coming on early as a replacement.

Other Magners League matches were scheduled for Sunday but were postponed due to the ongoing weather problems across Europe. This means that today will see five Magners League matches played - all derby fixtures. The battle of the two best Welsh sides was delayed until today (Monday) as Ospreys will play host to Scarlets. Similarly, Cardiff Blues away match in the second Welsh derby vs Newport Gwent Dragons has also been delayed due to freezing conditions. In Ireland Ulster will play host to Leinster in Belfast and Connacht will take on Munster at Galway.

The Scottish fixture of Glasgow Warriors vs Edinburgh could see the visitors jump into the top half of the ladder. It will be an intersting fixture for Argentine and Canadian rugby fans as Canadian tryscoring machine, DTH van der Merwe will again start on the left wing and be joined by former Pumas fullback Bernardo Stortoni in the homesides back three. Another former Puma, Federico Martín Aramburu, will be on the bench as will Canadian prop Kevin Tkachuk.
