Bordeaux and Saint Etienne are France's eighth and eleventh largest cities but their rugby teams play in France's second division, the Pro D2 while cities with far smaller populations like Biarritz, Castres and Perpignan continue to be strong teams in the Top 14. Both Bordeaux and Saint Etienne hosted matches at Rugby World Cup 2007 and both have hosted Top 14 semi finals in recent seasons.
On saturday the teams from the two cities, Club athlétique de Saint-Étienne Loire sud rugby and Union Bordeaux Bègles met in the sixth round of the Pro D2 in Saint Etienne with the visitors winning 48-16 as their quest to be promoted to the Top 14 continues. Current Argentine international wing, Rafael Carballo scored the final try of the game for the Bordeaux side who sit in fifth position behind Albi, Lyon, Aurillac and Oyonnax. CA Saint Etienne, in contrast, are currently in last position and were promoted this season from France´s third division, the Fédérale 1.
Carballo is likely to retain his place in Los Pumas squad for the november internationals vs Italy, France and Ireland which would mean he would be prefered to players playing in the Top 14, Magners League or the Aviva Premiership. Carballo previously played for Toulon from 2004-2006 and Castres from 2006-2009 in the Top 14.
