Canada lose the Bowl Final at the Commonwealth Games
The XIXth edition of the Commonwealth Games has seemingly only just begun but the Rugby Sevens tournament has already come and gone. Number one seeds, New Zealand won their thrid consecutive Gold medal after defeating Australia 24-17 in the finals and going through the tournament undefeated. Australai, in losing the final, claimed the silver medal whilst South Africa defeated England 17-14 to win the bronze. They were all helped by the fact that Fiji were banned from participating because of the country´s military dictatorship.
The Americas had two participating teams ranging from the largest country in the commonwealth, Canada to South America´s only Commonwealth country, Guyana. Both countries were in the same pool as champions New Zealand and fellow heavyweights, Scotland. Canada were targetting two wins to enter the Gold Medal quarterfinals but fellow short after losing a close match to Scotland 19-17. The Canadians did manage to defeat Guyana by a staggering scorline of 47-0 in their pool encounter before defeating hosts India 43-10 and Uganda 22-17. Papua New Guinea clamined the Bowl Final after knocking over Canada 19-10 in what must be considered an upset.
Guyana went through the tournament winless but did show good skills in patches in all their matches and put up a good fight against Tonga in losing 21-14. Canada will not be satisfied with their results but the Americas did not finish as the worst reason. Asia did. All three Asian teams (India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka) were winless. This only goes to underline Argentina as the country that should host Rugby World Cup 2023. In addition to the region being inferior to the Americas in Commonwealth rugby, Japan will host 2019 despite not being as competitive as Argentina.
