Brazilian Women Progressing well in Rugby
Despite being the fourth best international side in South America in mens rugby, the Brazilian women are the queens of South American rugby having knocked over all opposition including Argentina. The likes of Canada and the United States continue to be significantly better than Brazil but it is nevertheless remarkable that Brazil are the continents best team. The reason Brazil has a strong womens team is simple - clubs in the country support the developed of women´s rugby and the number of players continues to rise as the sport itself is increasingly known in the country.
The future of women´s ruigby in Brazil appears very positive as athletes continue the countdown to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Both the men and the women should compete in the rugby Sevens tournament as it is customary for hosts to do so. Should they indeed do so it is safe to say that both genders will have significantly better teams than they do at present and the women should be close to qualifying for the Womens Rugby World Cup.
Brazil´s women qualified for the 2009 Rugby Sevens World Cup in Dubai and had a good tournament. They qualified after winning the Punta del Este Sevens tournament in Uruguay that year to offically be South American champions. They had another chance to show their might against Argentina this year when a sevens match took place in Rosario during the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship.
