2010 Shute Shield Final

The Grand Final of Australia´s Premier Domestic Rugby Competition, the Shute Shield, will take place today between Randwick and current champions Sydney Unversity at Concord Oval in Sydney. Randwick have made it to the final after defeating Manly and Eastwood in the first two weeks of the playoffs while Sydney University eliminated Eastern Suburbs and Southern Disticts to book their place in the final.

The competition is in no way a city competition involving substandard players. The competition actually has a large number of international players. Wallabies such as Ben Alexander, Kurtley Beale, Berrick Barnes, Mark Chisholm, Matt Dunning, Julian Huxley, Sekope Kepu and Australian captain Rocky Elsom all played in the play-offs section of this years competition.

This years tournament has also been the second to feature Chilean international backrower, Cristian Westenenk whose club the Manly Marlins were defeated 29-25 by Randwick in the elimination semi final. Westenenk scored two tries in the semi final but Manly came up short on the day. Despite not making it to the final, Manly had a very good season and Westenenk was a key member for the club. Westenenk´s efforts have helped increase the image of Chilean rugby. The future of rugby in the Americas continues to look positive and Westenenk´s success in the Shute Shield is a reminder that there is more to rugby in the Americas than just Argentina - other countries are emerging.
