Scotland vs Argentina, 2005

Argentina's rise to a world power began at Rugby World Cup 1999 when Argentina defeated Samoa, Japan and Ireland to qualify for the Quarter-Finals for the first time ever. But, before 1999 Argentina had already defeated some elite teams.

The players from the history making team in 1999 had formed a strong team that defeated Australia in 1997 and went into Rugby World Cup 1999 after defeating Scotland 31-22 at the home of Scottish rugby, Murrayfield. Scotland, were European Champions having won the Five Nations and so in defeating the Scots away, Argentina were completing a great accomplishment.

Argentina returned to Murrayfield in 2001 and won 25-16, again in 2005 to win 23-19 and in 2009 to win 9-6. The win in 1999 was truely remarkable as it was an amateur side defeating a professional team. Since then, Argentina has been made up almost exclusively of professional players. Winning three in a row at Murrayfield is no easy task. The 2005 victory was a continuation of success from Los Pumas who had defeated France in Marseilles in 2004 and drawn with the Lions in Cardiff six months earlier.
