Uruguay defeat Kazakhstan to advance to RWC 2011 Play-Off Final.

Uruguay defeated Kazakhstan 44-07 yesterday at Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo to remain in contention for the 20th and final place at Rugby World Cup 2011. Uruguay were winning 20-0 at half time but Kazakhstan scored the first try of the second half with inside centre Ildar Abdrazakou finishing off a superb try for the visitors. Fullback, Sergey Nozhkin converted.

But, the South Americans were too strong and Uruguay outclassed the central Asians by four tries to one and also scored a penalty try. The star for Los Teros was right winger, Leandro Leivas who scored the first three tries for Uruguay. Flyhalf, Emiliano Caffera also had a good match kicking 11 points while inside centre, Martín Crosa scored a second half try for Los Teros and Juan de Freitas kicked one penalty and one conversion.

In defeating Kazakhstan, Uruguay have advanced to the play-off final. They will face Romania who defeated Tunisia 56-13 yesterday in Buzau. The play-off final will be played in November over two matches. The first will be in Uruguay on November 6 and the second in Romania one week latter on November 13. The winner will play in Pool B of Rugby World Cup 2011 against Argentina, England, Georgia and Scotland.

Romania have been to every Rugby World Cup. This is the first time they have failed to qualify directly through automatic European qualification. Romania finsihed third behind Georgia and Russia in the European section of qualification which put them into the match vs Tunisia. Now the Europeans have to defeat two time Rugby World Cup qualifiers Uruguay.

If Uruguay are successful, Los Teros will join Argentina, Canada and the United States to give the Americas four teams at New Zealand 2011. This would mean 20% of the participants are from the Americas - the only region who will not have hosted a Rugby World Cup by 2023.
